Getting creative for the centenary

On Thursday 19th June, Women’s Lives Leeds (WLL) service user Advisory Board – hosted a free creative day for women in Leeds city centre.

As part of the centenary of suffrage celebrations we have worked in partnership with students from Leeds Arts University, and this resulted in a day for women to take part in creative activities; zine making, needlecraft and rope basket weaving. Women brought their children who also took part in craft activities.  We all shared a simple lunch and then showed each other the amazing pieces people had created.

At the heart of each activity were women sharing skills and stories. They took on themes of womanhood, using your voice, suffrage celebrations and Women Friendly Leeds.

Advisory Board members were present to share their experiences of how they got involved and what they get out of it. The women who took part were then invited to the next Advisory Board meeting on September 13th 2018 at 10.30am-1.00pm. It will be held at Voluntary Action Leeds in Hunslet.  If you would like more information of how and who can join, please call the core team on 0113 288 4590.

Works from the day will be exhibited later in the year at our Suffrage Participation Celebration Event on November 21st.  This will be in conjunction with other creative suffrage projects WLL are involved within our partner organizations this year. Watch this space for more details and how you can get tickets.

Everyone who attended said they felt it was fun, that they were welcomed and valued and most said they would definitely attend another WLL event.
