Girls to campaign for women-only sexual health service in Leeds

At the girls forum the young women had previously identified five main priorities which are; Diversity, Equality, Freedom, Opportunities and Safety. The young women chose opportunities and focused on this priority looking at opportunities for girls in Leeds.

Before the young women split off into groups some of the peer educators planned some games / icebreakers for the young women to feel relaxed and at ease with one another, this really helped when in their groups. In these groups they discussed – what opportunities are available to girls in Leeds?  And also what opportunities they would like to see for girls in Leeds?

The young women identified that the sexual health clinic that has recently moved to Merrion Centre is now mixed with adults and young women and the young women felt that this needs to be looked at and potentially having a women’s only service for this.

The young women explored this further in their groups and recognised this to be a long term plan and wasn’t something that could be changed overnight, however this was something they still want to explore in more depth.

The young women agreed that at the next forum they will look at a different priority from the five that were chosen and making this possible over short term period to create a campaign around.

Below are some of the feedback from the young women who attended the Forum…

“It’s good to be able to come together with other likeminded girls and talk about things that matter to us.”

“I’m not always that confident in groups but playing the games at the start helped me to feel more comfortable to talk with the rest of the group.”

“It was good having a DJ there, I enjoyed meeting everyone their and giving my ideas to issues that are important to me.”

“This is the first time I have attended a group like this and I’m really glad I came, I will tell my other friends to come along too.”
